How it works

How January Christmas tree pickup works

  1. Step 1

    We set your pickup

Pickup happens during our scheduled January pickup window. We confirm your day so you know when to have the tree ready.

  2. Step 2

    You take everything off

Lights, ornaments, hooks, tinsel, garland and the skirt. A bare tree is what can be recycled.

  3. Step 3

    We carry it out

The tree leaves the house, our stand goes back on the truck and the tree goes to green waste recycling where accepted.

Before pickup day

Your Christmas tree pickup checklist

Ten minutes the night before makes pickup quick and keeps needles off your floors.

  • Unplug and take off every string of lights
  • Ornaments and hooks off, including the ones hiding near the trunk
  • Tinsel, garland and ribbon off. Tinsel is the hardest to spot
  • Tree skirt off so the stand is easy to reach
  • Soak up most of the stand water with a towel or turkey baster
  • Lay an old sheet along the path to the door so needles go out with the tree
  • Behind a gate? Add TreeDrop to the guest list for pickup day

Where it goes

Christmas tree recycling, not the landfill

A clean, undecorated tree is green waste. Where local facilities accept it, trees are chipped down for mulch and compost instead of being buried. That only works if every decoration is off, which is why we ask you to strip the tree before we come.

We take care of getting the tree to the right place. You do not have to find a drop off site or wait for a city collection day.

The stand comes back with us too.

It was a loan, so there is nothing to store in the garage until next year.

Bought your tree somewhere else?

Christmas tree disposal options in Orange County

Our January pickup is part of every TreeDrop order. If your tree came from somewhere else, send us a note and ask.

Most cities in Orange County also run curbside Christmas tree collection for a short stretch after the holidays. Rules vary by city and trash hauler, but they usually ask you to remove the stand and every decoration, and many ask you to cut tall trees into shorter pieces. Check your city or hauler's website for the dates.

Why pickup is in the price

  • No dragging a dry, shedding tree through the house
  • No saw, no cutting it down to fit a bin
  • No stand to clean and store
  • No watching for the city collection week

Questions

Christmas tree pickup questions

I live behind a guard gate. What should I do?

Add TreeDrop to your guest list for your delivery date and again for your January pickup. Put any gate instructions or codes in your order notes so the crew has them on the day.

How does January pickup work?

During our January pickup window we come back, carry the tree out, take our stand back and handle disposal, with the tree going to green waste recycling where that is accepted. You do not drag it to the curb or cut it up to fit a bin. More on the pickup page.

Do I have to take the decorations off before pickup?

Yes, please take everything off: lights, ornaments, hooks, tinsel, garland and the tree skirt. Green waste recycling cannot take decorations, and we cannot sort through them for you. A bare tree makes for a quick pickup.

Can you pick up a tree I bought somewhere else?

January pickup comes with every TreeDrop tree. If yours came from somewhere else, send us a note and ask. Most Orange County cities also collect trees curbside in early January, so check your city or trash hauler for dates and rules.

Order now. We will take it away in January.

Pickup is already in the price of every tree: 6 ft $465 or 8 ft $589, delivered and set up.
