Coto de Caza is Spanish for hunting reserve, and that's how this corner of unincorporated Orange County started, with a hunting lodge planned in 1968. Lot sales began in 1971, and an equestrian center went up around the time the first homes did. Today the whole community sits behind a guard gate, which shapes how Christmas tree delivery in Coto de Caza works: the crew comes in as your guest, once in December and again in January.
You pick a Noble Fir or Fraser Fir online, $465 for a 6 ft tree or $589 for an 8 ft, plus tax, with the loaned stand, delivery, setup and January pickup included. Vaulted rooms here can call for a 10 to 14 ft tree, so we take special orders for anything 9 ft and up, with a custom quote once we've confirmed a tree is available and checked the way in. Have the ceiling height handy when you order your tree.
Neighborhoods
Inside the gates and just outside
Los Ranchos Estates
A separate private community behind Coto's gates, with its own homeowners association. Ask the HOA if guests have to clear one list or two.
The Golf and Racquet Club
Its two private courses by Robert Trent Jones Jr. sit in the heart of the community: the North Course from 1987, the South Course from April 1995.
Coto Equestrian Center
Four of the five 1984 Olympic modern pentathlon events were held here. If your horse property has its own gate, add the code to your notes.
The Lodge
The hunting lodge envisioned in 1968 is now the Lodge at Coto de Caza, a handy landmark when you write directions for the crew.
Wagon Wheel
Wagon Wheel Elementary sits just outside Coto's gates, and the Wagon Wheel neighborhood nearby is on the same route, with the same trees and prices.
Christmas tree delivery in Coto de Caza, gate to great room
Two guest list entries, one for each visit
Because Coto is guard gated, the crew comes in as your guest. Put TreeDrop on the list for delivery day, and set a reminder now to list us again ahead of January pickup, since that second entry is easy to forget over the holidays. In Los Ranchos Estates, ask the HOA about a second list. Put the name of whoever will be home in your checkout notes.
Long driveways and property gates
Some homes here sit on an acre or more, with a long driveway, a motor court or a second gate at the property line. From where the truck parks, the crew walks the tree all the way to the room it's going in. Tell us roughly how far that is, whether there's a slope or steps along the way, and any code for your own gate.
Measuring a vaulted great room
Measure from the floor to the lowest point of the ceiling directly above where the tree will go, then knock off about a foot to leave room for the stand and a star or angel. At 9 ft, either of our standard sizes works, and at 10 ft the 8 ft tree fits. Anything higher is special order territory, so mention any doors or turns a tall tree has to clear on the way in.
The local season
Santa Ana season and a tree that stays fresh
December in the foothills often brings Santa Ana winds. The National Weather Service says these dry winds are most common in the cooler months, September through May, and that they often feel warm or even hot. A cut tree standing in a sunny great room feels that too.
Check the stand every morning and keep it full, more often during a warm, windy stretch, and keep the tree clear of fireplaces and heater vents. If you're traveling for the holidays, ask a neighbor to handle the water. Add TreeDrop back to the guest list for January pickup before you go, so it doesn't get lost in the post holiday shuffle.

January
January Christmas tree pickup, gate and all
In January the crew returns during the scheduled pickup window, carries out the undecorated tree and takes back the stand. Take off every ornament, light and hook before then. Coto de Caza is unincorporated, and the county's rule is that haulers collect Christmas trees on the first two regular collection days after Christmas, with Waste Management serving this area. TreeDrop pickup is already part of your order, so nobody has to drag a dry 9 ft fir down the driveway.
How tall a tree can you bring for a vaulted ceiling?
Taller than 8 ft, by special order. Each tall tree is quoted on its own and depends on what's available and a look at the way in, because a 12 ft fir has to clear the front door, the entry and every turn before it stands up. Send the ceiling height and a few notes about the route inside when you ask.
Do you deliver to Los Ranchos Estates?
Yes. Los Ranchos Estates has its own homeowners association behind Coto's gates, and it's on our route like the rest of the community. Add TreeDrop to every guest list that applies, once for your delivery date and again for January pickup, and leave a contact name at checkout.
Can the crew carry the tree up a long driveway?
Yes. The crew carries the tree from the truck to the room where it will stand, long driveway included, and takes it out the same way in January. Tell us the distance, any slope or steps and where the truck can stop. Unusual access can add a charge, and you'll see it confirmed before you check out.
Do you deliver to Wagon Wheel and Dove Canyon too?
Yes, we deliver to both. Wagon Wheel is close by, and Dove Canyon, which has its own guard gate, is part of Rancho Santa Margarita. The same guest list advice holds there: add us for delivery day and again for January pickup.
